August 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month Joan Dunlap

森林舞会数学 joined the co-op in April of 2014.
She states that her range of media is Fabric Art but that hardly describes the many projects she has tackled over the years.

According to Joan “I have been into crafts most of my life” everything from sewing for her kids, knitting,  crocheting and tole painting (painted, enameled, or lacquered tinplate used to make decorative domestic objects) as well as one stroke painting using oils and acrylics.

Quit

Quilting became her most creative and satisfying craft. She has won many ribbons in juried quilt shows. After many years of making quilts for her family, she now makes them to sell. She still loves sewing, making rope wrap items, purses and recycling neckties for many different projects. Two of her newest crafts are pine needle baskets and needle felting.

Joan is a self-taught crafter. She prefers to try new and different crafts at fabric arther own pace and utilize her own techniques. Long before the days of the “YouTube” videos Joan would collect books on the crafts she was interested in and she still has many, many books about quilting. She has taught quilting, mostly featuring new techniques, this was a few years ago when she was doing her show & tell thing. She would show her quilts and sometimes some of her current projects at quilt guilds and some senior parks.

August 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month Joan Dunlap has been the recipient of many ribbons and awards over the years. Joan has never met a craft that she didn’t want to try! She especially enjoys the crafts that recycle items such as her necktie creations and zipper jewelry.

Congratulations Joan.

June 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month Mary FrancisOur June 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month Mary Francis is one of the newest members of the Caladium Arts Co-Operative, she joined us in April of this
year. She travels to the co-op from Lake Alfred in Polk county. She works in a number of mediums and has brought a variety of wonderfully unique
items to the co-op.

Mary was born in Wisconsin, moving to Colorado when she was 13. She Mary Francislearned to sew early in her life, and still carries the love of creating in fabric.
She grew up and graduated from high school in Colorado and met her husband shortly after graduating. This summer they will celebrate their
53rd anniversary. Both Mary and Keith have enjoyed traveling. This was probably sparked by their several transfers with the company for which
they both worked.

Mary has been a decorative artist since 1989,starting in 1989 as a “stress reliever” for her high-tension job. She started painting in Colorado, with a teacher who taught several mediums: oil, acrylic, and acrylic gouache. Since then she has learned to use watercolor, color pencil, and pen and ink. Her favorite medium currently is color pencil. She has started to learn portraiture in color pencil and finds it very enjoyable. Mary enjoys learning and tries to attend as many classes and seminars as money
and time permits.

Mary has held many offices in the Society of Decorative Painters’ Chapters in both Colorado and Florida. Her Florida Chapter, Osceola Decorative
Artists (a chapter of the Society of Decorative Painters) in Kissimmee was where she served twice as president of the chapter. Mary finds that painting and the arts is what helps generate good friendships and wonderful experiences.

Congratulations to June 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month Mary Francis

March 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month Betty Near

Betty Near is our featured crafter of the month, she  joined the Co- Op in April 2008.

She was born in Michigan but has lived in Lake Placid for the last 36 years. Betty turned 90! on February 20th of this year.

To celebrate she went on a cruise with her family and tried her hand at Zip lining…..! We hope to post a picture on our website.  Crafting has helped keep her young. 😊

Betty does counted cross stitch on linen type material. Cross-stitch is a form of sewing and a popular form of counted-thread embroidery in which X-shaped stitches in a tiled, raster-like pattern are used to form a picture. The stitcher counts the threads on a piece of even weave fabric in each direction so that the stitches are of uniform size and appearance.

She has won many ribbons at the country fair over the past 40 years. She worked as an x-ray tech for 25 years before moving to Lake Placid.

She was first introduced to the art of wood turning in 1999 when she was given a broken mini-lathe, fixed it, took a class in making pens in St. Louis, Missouri and then made pens for all her family and friends. Selling pens enabled her to buy a Powermatic, which began bigger projects in woodturning.

She also works with glass. She dabbles in “sagged, draped and fused glass” work using a kiln.

She moved to Dallas in 2001 and began to turn bowls and platters. Throughout the years she has taken various classes from very gifted and renown contemporary artists, allowing her to incorporate this knowledge into making beautiful artwork of her own.woodturning

One of the things that she learned was the process of marbling, usually applied to cloth and paper. Applying that technique to wood made it very colorful and unique, and allowed her to step aside from the traditional forms of turning. Additionally, she has learned other coloring and texturing techniques from varied contemporary artists and has combined these to go outside the box and make colorful classics of her own. She is working on making new perspectives in contemporary turned wood. Every piece is unique and signed by the artist.

She has displayed her work in galleries located in Santa Fe, Dennison Texas, the Plano Art Gallery and now has collection of her art at the Caladium Arts & Crafts Co-operative in Lake Placid Florida.

One of Bonnie’s favorite quotes is: “I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree.” By Joyce Kilmer.

Bonnies says that she has always been impressed with the beauty of the tree world. Knowing that a tree is home to a universe of other creatures inspires her to preserve its beauty and value. When a tree dies, it lives on in the form of wood to create living spaces, furnish them and heat them. It also lives on in creative artistic expression.

A piece of wood on the lathe is her canvas for creativity. The outcome is limited only by the boundaries of the visions in her mind. The exploration of the wood leads to unexpected twists and turns as it evolves from original intention to finished piece. She has total freedom during the process of making a bowl or a platter and is honored at the opportunity to achieve unique beauty with her own hands from a piece of God’s work.

Her particular path of woodturning involves the creation of wooden beauty that has no function except that of bringing joy and happiness to the beholders. She also explores multidimensional work that includes various coloring techniques, and incorporate other materials, such as metal and glass. She is devoted to creating objects of art that are unique and pleasing to the eyes and to the souls of those who gaze upon them

As February 2019 Artist/Crafter of the Month, Bonnie MacDonald art is featured at a central location in the shop. Stop in and see her unique work.

patti pipp

She is originally from the Finger Lakes region of New York. She currently lives in Arcadia with her husband of 48 years. They are both retired and enjoying having the time to pursue their hobbies.

Four years ago, she joined the Peace River carvers and
took wood-burning classes.

About three years ago she started collecting interesting bottles and used fun things to “bedazzle” them. She adds cordless lights to the inside of the bottles which create ambiance where ever they are placed. She has combined these two hobbies by pairing the lighted bottles with wlighted bottlesood burned wine glass caddies.

She enjoys showing off her creations at indoor arts & crafts shows. In addition to these two hobbies she enjoys music. Theses pursuits fulfill her creative needs.
